Hello to everyone! I would like to share with you some of my background and how I got my start in the sport of bodybuilding. I was born and raised in a small town nestled in the hills of beautiful West Virgina. Believe it or not we do wear shoes where I come from. I was raised as an only child in a wonderful Christian home by parents who taught me love and respect. I attended a Christian Academy from kindergarten thru 6th grade then in the 7th grade I transfered to public school. This was a big adjustment for a shy little girl like me. I was never outgoing enough to paricipate in sports in school. However, had the Christian school offered sports for girls I may have become involved. When I reached the public school I took gymnastics and absolutely loved it! As the year went on our instuctor told us that we would present a program as a class in front of the whole school. That did it for me! I was so backward... this ended my short stint with gymnastics. As I moved on to high school, I thought I would love to run track or play softball, but I just could not get up the courage to participate in front of such a large audience. My biggest interest throughout my school days was art class. This is what I love to do, and I enjoy every aspect of it involving all different media. At a young age, I would sit down on Saturday morning with a pencil and paper to draw the characters of my favorite cartoon shows. In high school, after presenting my porfolio on "Bows" done in all different types of media I received a scholarship to Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, OH. However, after realizing that I may not be able to build a career in the art field I decided that this was just a hobby for me. After graduating high school I made a quick decision to attend beauty school. I had always liked to do hair and often practiced on my friends growing up. This was the perfect opportunity for me to display my artistic talents and creativity. Immediately after beauty school I started to work in a local salon, and I have since built a wonderful clientele over the past 17 years. Seven years ago I did open a own salon of my own which I call "Cut Ups". I am blessed to have such a successful business near the small town where I grew up. Just as I finished up beauty school, I started dating my now husband, Adam, whom I first met in art class. We were happily married on April Fool's Day in 1995...no joke! Knowing my husband as the prankster he is I thought this was only appropriate. Adam is the one responsible for getting me into the gym. We started training together at the local gym shortly after we began dating. He is a very outgoing person and was always involved in sports. He played a big role in bringing me out of my shyness. I started working out just to get into shape. Although I never had a weight problem, I loved the changes I was seeing in my body as a result of all the hard work. I was hooked in no time! I finally found a sport where I did not have to get up in front of people :) In 2001, Adam started competing in bodybuilding in the NPC. I was always there to support him while loving the bodybuilding atmosphere. It was then that I told him I would love to look like those girls on stage, but he'd never get me up there. I never gave competing much thought when it came to women's bodybuilding or fitness. I was just not cut out for that! It wasn't until figure came along that I started to contemplate the whole competition thing. After much encouragement from Adam and my friends, I decided to give it a try... just this once. I will never forget the first time I stepped on the stage. It was very overwhelming! The dieting and training were far more easy than getting up on stage in front of all those people, but it was time to overcome my fear and live my dream. This has been my biggest accomplishment! Fortunately, I had enlisted the help of trainer Mike Davies to advise me on the diet and presentation which allowed me to have the confidence I needed for a successful first show. I love competing, and I gain more confidence with every show. Who would have thought... look at me now! |
